99 Boys Win Top Bracket at CASL
2010 Nov 14: 99B Blue Win All Games and Bring Home the Championship

During the weekend of November 6-7, FC Alliance girl’s teams experienced major success at the prestigious Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Girls Shootout in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Just one week later, it was time for the boys to take their turn. With most of the U14 and older teams participating in the state tournament the same weekend, it was up to the younger guys to represent the Club well at CASL Boys Shootout.

And without a doubt, the FC Alliance 99 Boys Blue team did just that.  Playing in the top bracket against some of the toughest teams in the nation, the 99B Blue team won all four of their games and brought home the championship cup!

The team opened the tournament with two thrilling games, both against nationally elite clubs. The first was a 3-2 win over the Richmond Kickers. The two teams each took the other’s best shot, before the Alliance boys prevailed.

“It was a game of two heavyweights fighting it out,” said Coach David Clothier. “They had an excellent squad.  It was a great win for our team.”

The second game was a 2-1 triumph over Triangle United Gold. Triangle United is one of North Carolina’s most dominant clubs.  Then on Sunday morning, the ’99 Blue cruised to a surprisingly easy win over Virginia Rush.

In the finals, 99B Blue met an outstanding team from Northern Virginia. The boys from Loudoun Soccer Club held a 1-0 lead for much of the game.  Exceptional play by goalkeeper Ziven Clark turned away several other scoring opportunities which could have put the game away.  Coach Clothier added, “Clark’s play throughout the tournament was superior.”

Then, with ten minutes to play, the ’99 Blue found life, scoring a goal to tie the game. From there, the game went into overtime, which our boys completely dominated, scoring two goals to ultimately win 3-1!

“We were down but never out,” Clothier added.  “The game tying goal gave us a great amount of momentum.  The boys really fed off that energy and took control in overtime.”

Head coach Russell Stewart, who was unable to attend the event, commented that "he couldn’t be more pleased with the progress of the group. The boys played great soccer, but more importantly, they gelled well as a team and are really starting to buy into the program.”

Congratulations to the 99B Blue, U12 team and Coaches Russell Stewart and David Clothier on series of National caliber wins!
