01 Girls and 02 Girls settle things in penalty shootout
When you looked at the U14 Girls schedule for the annual Javanon Fall Invitational, the presence of eight elite teams from five states made you wonder how difficult it would be to advance to the finals. With two FC Alliance teams in the division, hopes were a little higher that the club would get a representative into the championship. After twelve pool play games, two teams were left standing and they were both wearing FC Alliance jerseys: 01 Girls NPL and 02 Girls NPL. The two teams raced through qualifying games by allowing only one goal each, and fittingly it took a penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw to crown the 01 Girls champions.
"It was awesome that both our teams made the finals," said 01 Girls coach Kevin Keck. "It was a strong event and I think both squads really earned it."
Keck's team had to knock off several powerful clubs to punch their ticket. They recorded 2-0 wins over host Javanon and Dynamo Red of Indiana. Same for 02 Girls NPL coach Kris Ray's team. The younger girls outscored three stout opponents by a combind score of 9-1 to advance. In the final, aggressive defending and several fantastic goalkeeper saves kept the scoreline at 0-0 at the end of regulation.
"You never like to see a game go to a shootout instead of being settled on the field." stated Keck. "However, given that we're from the same club and all in this together, it was kinding of fitting. I'm proud of all the girls for a great weekend."
