The ice has barely melted from the winter season and FC Alliance’s U15 Gold Girls are already champions of a Spring tournament. Considering that in soccer early February is officially the Spring season, it is a great start to 2011 for the club. Coach Jeff Wolfenbarger’s team defeated squads from Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky to bring home the gold. Most impressive about the weekend is that the girls shutout all four of their opponents.
The five-team bracket was played as a round robin in two days at the Camp Creek Soccer Complex in Northwest Atlanta. The first game was close early, against Kentucky’s 96 Flyers, but the Alliance girls held on for a 2-0 win. Next they grabbed first place in the bracket by hammering Signal Mountain Storm 3-0.
A chilly Sunday morning was essentially the championship game. By winning, the girls would ensure themselves the title, making the last game a mere formality. After a testy start against host Cobb FC, the 96 FC Alliance Girls Gold pulled away, winning 2-0. The final match was a 4-0 trouncing of Chattanooga United.
Goalkeeper Kate Cotrell was responsible for the four shutouts, although the defense was stout all weekend. The organization of the squad on the field was impressive, considering it consists of players recently pulled together from four other teams.
