With the state tournament just a few weeks away, teams are looking for momentum heading into the most important event of the year. The 98 Girls Gold may have gained plenty of it this past weekend, winning their division of the prestigious Brentwood Adidas Women’s Invitational.
Outscoring their opponents by a combined scored of 8-1, the FC Alliance team claimed the championship with wins over Tophat (Georgia), Bluegrass SC (Kentucky), and Tupelo FC (Mississippi). Goalkeeper Laurel Neuzil was fantastic in net, credited with three shutouts. It was a sweet win for a team who made it all the way to the finals of the Concorde Fire Challenge in February, but fell just short.
Coaches David Clothier and Eddy Semaan are certainly hoping it is the springboard they need to make a strong push for the state crown.
“The team is peaking at just the right time,” Clothier said. “[However] they have taken their game to the next level."
“The ball movement of this team is wonderful to watch,” Semaan added. “I am very impressed with the progress of team, their hard work is really paying off.”
The 98 Gold will compete in the state tournament the weekend of May 21-22 in Chattanooga.
