FC Alliance’s rapidly growing North program has taken a major step forward. In only it’s second year, the satellite group has claimed a tournament championship. The 99 Girls North Select recently won their division at the GSA Adidas Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia. Coached by Jason French and Tim McMahan, the team cruised through the first day of competition, before having to grind out two slugfests. It is a significant accomplishment, as the club’s goal is to offer quality competitive soccer in all parts of the area.
The surprisingly warm December weekend started well for the Girls North. They opened the tournament with a decisive 3-0 win over Concorde Fire Central, and then followed that performance with an equally as stout 4-1 triumph over Atlanta’s Wolves Gold. From there, things got much tougher. They traded punches with United FA Silver before prevailing 2-1, and then survived an inspired run at revenge by the Wolves Gold in the championship game. 99 North won 1-0, but it took scrappy defensive play to hold on for the title.
