Being the first at something is always a significant moment for a team. For Jon Schneider’s 97 Girls Black and 94 Girls Black, they had to share such a moment on Sunday, March 4. Fortunately, it was with each other- two sister teams. On the same day, they both became the first teams from the state of Tennessee to ever win the prestigious Region 3 Invitational College Showcase. The grueling three-day event is held in the Nashville area; however, since it’s inception, it has been dominated by teams from other states. All that changed when Coach Schneider and his teams took the field this past weekend.
The 97 Girls, defending Region League champions, outscored five opponents by a combined score of 10-2 to claim the U15 title. They defeated teams from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The championship game was against vaunted Javanon FC, the Kentucky state champions, which FC Alliance claimed with a solid 3-1 win.
A few hours later, the 94 Girls Black earned the U18 crown. Despite Tennessee’s previous lack of success in the tournament, Schneider’s older squad simply dominated the field. They didn’t allow a goal in five games, outscoring their opponents 12-0. In fact, the first three games were all won by at least three goals each. It wasn’t until the last day, in the semifinals and finals, that the team was truly challenged (1-0 wins over Ohio Galaxies and Hammer FC).
"It was a long hard weekend fighting the wind and the five game format," Schneider said. "However, both teams played with a lot of heart and finished on top."
