Every goal in every game counts for something. This proved especially true for Coach Elaine Roth’s 04 Girls Black in the 2013 Bash in the Boro tournament. The middle Tennessee event featured a stout top U9 bracket, which was scored on a points system based on wins, goals and shutouts. The upstart FC Alliance team took home the championship by finishing ahead of the field by one precious point. Meanwhile, Roth’s 03 Girls Black also grabbed top honors in a U10 division, the result of a thrilling 3-2 championship game win.
The road was a perilous one for the 04 Black squad. After tying host 04 Lady Strikers in the tourney’s opening game, the two teams were practically deadlocked going into the third and final game. An FC Alliance 3-0 shutout triumph over TSC Girls Premier trumped a Lady Strikers 4-1 win over Ohio’s Revolution Academy. One less goal for the 04 Girls Black, or one more allowed, and the result would have been different.
The 03 Girls Black had to win four consecutive games to grab their title. Wins over Jackson Futbol Club (1-0), TSC 03 Elite North (3-1) and TSC 03 Elite South (3-1) punched their ticket to the finals. Awaiting was host Lady Strikers Blue, a team who had not conceded a single goal in three tournament games up to that point. Roth’s squad refused to be intimidated, ratcheting up the attack for a 3-2 victory.
