They say that history repeats itself. Perhaps this has been true for a long time when it comes to the Region 3 tournament and teams from Tennessee. Ordinarily dominated by superpowers from Texas, Florida and Georgia, FC Alliance finally took a stand. The 97 Girls Black became the first team from East Tennessee to ever advance to a regional final, with a resounding 2-0 win in the semifinals. In the championship game, the squad lost a hearbreaker 1-0 in overtime. Nevertheless, they made history, as well as FC Alliance one very proud club.
The region tournament has been a smashing success for the club this year. Three teams advanced out of pool play, and two of them advanced to the semifinals. Region 3 consists of some of the top soccer states in the nation. The tournament, the last stop before the national championships, takes each state and premier league champion. Traditionally, teams not based in major metropolitan areas such as Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, Miami and Oklahoma City struggle. Not this time around. The 96 Girls Black won three straight games to open the tournament. The 97 teams stormed to the semifinals. Coach Shane Moore’s 99 Girls Black missed advancing to the regional quarterfinals on a goal differential tiebreaker in pool play.
The 97 Boys Black eventually lost a heartbreaker 2-1.
